What an Accountant job description screens for
Understanding each one tells you what your resume has to prove for that specific role.
Accountant roles also vary by what the company runs and reports — some are Tally-and-GST SME roles, some are SAP or Oracle ERP roles, some are statutory-and-audit-support roles. A resume matched to one under-matches the others, so the JD's software and compliance context has to be reflected in your resume.
The Software Filter
Accounting software
Accounting software is the first and most literal filter. If the JD names Tally and SAP and your resume lists only Excel and a different package, the match drops. Name the software the JD specifies, using its exact phrasing, where you genuinely use it.
The Taxation Threshold
Compliance and taxation
Compliance and taxation is a high-weight filter in the Indian market. GST, TDS, income tax, statutory filings, and the relevant returns appear in most JDs, and a resume missing the named compliance areas under-matches even with strong bookkeeping.
The Accounting Cycle
Core accounting process
Core accounting process signals depth. Journal entries, ledgers, reconciliation, accounts payable and receivable, month-end close, and finalisation of accounts show the candidate runs the accounting cycle, not just data entry.
The Accuracy Proof
Reporting accuracy
Reporting accuracy converts a match into a shortlist. The strongest accountant resumes attach an outcome — accounts finalised on time, reconciliations cleared, errors reduced, audits supported — rather than listing duties.
